The Inauguration of GAMECO Phase III Hangar
A broader space for cargo conversion

On December 21st, 2021, a CSN A380 and a B747 was towed into GAMECO Phase III hangar, marking the on-time completion of the strategic expansion project.

GAMECO Phase III hangar is located to the north of Phase I and Phase II. It covers an area of 50,482.7 sqm with the total construction area of 98,086.7 sqm. The total investment of Phase III hangar amounts to 886 million RMB. The complex consists of a 34,000 sqm maintenance hall with a span of 334 meters, a three-floor office and workshop building and a 15,000 sqm basement for parking, civil defence and equipment storage. Aircraft washing, engine run-up and limited maintenance work will be performed on a newly added 59,000 sqm apron area. Phase III hangar can simultaneously park 6 wide-body aircraft and 5 narrow-body aircraft, and is designed to accommodate various aircraft types such as A380, A330, B777, B787, A320 and B737.

With the completion of Phase III hangar, the capacity of GAMECO will increase from 20 heavy maintenance production lines to 31, effectively alleviating the shortage of wide-body slots. This way GAMECO can offer more space and achieve more flexible slot planning for base maintenance to its customers and better support cargo conversion business. After Phase III hangar is put into use, it will also drive the development of line maintenance, component repair, composite repair, landing gear overhaul and part manufacturing, etc., providing stronger support for the rapid growth of China Southern Airlines’ fleet and greater production capacity to undertake third-party business at home and abroad.

On May 23rd, 2019, GAMECO announced the official start of the construction for GAMECO Phase III hangar. The hangar design fitted well with the company’s culture value in the theme of safety, reliability, efficiency and improvement to achieve “cost saving, environmental protection, technological innovation and people orientation.” In order to ensure the quality and duration of the project, based on design optimization and construction process improvement, the design and construction plan has overcome many challenges, such as complex geological conditions, karst cave refilling and the impact of COVID-19 which affect the construction period. The partial acceptance was completed in November 5th, 2021 and the pre-acceptance finished on November 20th, 2021. The hangar will be officially put into operation in January, 2022.

At present, GAMECO is running two hangars: Phase I and Phase II, in operation respectively from August, 2004 and November, 2013. The completion of Phase III hangar symbolizes another milestone for GAMECO and China Southern Airlines’ maintenance and engineering system.

GAMECO Phase III hangar is also a key development project in Guangzhou.
